Episode 1: Important vs. Urgent

1-min sober curiosity insight Jan 14, 2024

Exactly a year ago, I signed up for an online painting class.

For 12 months, each month, I wrote in my to-do list: Start the paint course.

But I never got to it.

More than once, I asked myself: shall I just cross it out, and say goodbye to my $200 investment?

But each time it managed to survive and made its way, migrating to the next month.

Why?

Because it is important to me - a long-time dream of mine to be able to create something beautiful with a paintbrush.

But if it is so important, how come I didn’t manage to start either?

Because it’s not urgent.

You see, as we go through life, things on our to-do list often fall into one of these two categories: important vs. urgent.

Urgent ones are those that require our immediate attention: paying the bill, picking up the kid, or attending a meeting.

Important ones are those that matter to us personally: reading that book you bought 3 months ago, going to the yoga class that makes you feel good, or spending more time with your loved ones.

To live a fulfilling life, it’s important to include both the list of urgent and the one of important, to neglect neither.

Here is the question I invite you to ponder today:
