Episode 5: Logical Reasons
Jan 22, 2024“I think I have a drinking problem.”
I still remember the first time I uttered those words.
The sound of it startled me.
What does that even mean?
A quick Google search told me: it meant that I have a disease…
…Though the experts seem unsure about the causes or the cure.
The internet said it wasn’t me to blame.
But it also didn’t tell me who or what to blame…
So guess what?
I blamed myself.
More often than not, when we don’t understand why or how something happens, we end up blaming ourselves for it.
Counterintuitively, it is much easier for our conscience to hold the idea “because I was bad” than “it’s not my fault”.
It gives our mind a sense of control…
…a sense of “had I not done that, this wouldn’t happen.”
In exchange for control, we carry shame.
And the shame is all too real with the struggle with alcohol when the whole society also seems to agree that you are the one to blame.
Judgment hurts when it comes from others, but it hurts even more when it comes from ourselves.
It makes us shrink.
It makes us want to hide.
It makes us rather do anything than feel it.
And guess what is the perfect way not to feel?
Yes - it’s more alcohol.
That’s why I am here to tell you the truth, my friend:
>> It’s not your fault that you lose control over alcohol.
When you join Sober Curiosity Lab, you come to realize that there is actually a logical reason behind why people lose control over alcohol.
